AS and LIKE can sometimes cause problems because they are sometimes similar.
That sentence can be written in a different way to show two examples of when they cannot substitute each other:
AS and LIKE can sometimes cause problems as they are sometimes like each other.
LIKE can never mean BECAUSE, so it's easy to remember only to use AS in that context.
Example "I took my coat as it was cold" = "I took my coat because it was cold"
AS cannot mean SIMILAR because it usually means IDENTICAL TO.
Look at the difference between these two descriptions:
My sister wears a uniform and keeps people safe. She works like a police officer. She works as a security guard.
My sister wears a uniform and keeps people safe. She works as a police officer.
I have used as for the real job not for the similar job.
Put AS or LIKE in the following sentences:
1. ____ it was so hot, we decided to wear T-shirts.
2. He was driving ____ a funeral chofer. He was so slow taking us to work this morning!
3. She was working ____ a funeral chofer. She drove very slowly to the cemetery.
4. The Earth is ____ Venus, although there are also some very big differences.
Now put your own examples in the comments.
